I left San Francisco and hitched a ride for Big Sur in the Central Coast Region. In a campground I met Jeffrey B. He had a packsack full of parsley. "I'm in a detoxification cure," he said, "that's the only thing I'm eating right now." "How long are you gonna eat that?" I asked him. "Five days. This is my second day." Jeffrey was about my age, he was really pale and had a big redhead afro. He invited me to eat as much parsley as I wanted. I had no food so I took him up on the offer. We sat down at the edge of the cliff overlooking the Pacific, the sky was perfectly blue and we could see small surfers zigzagging in the ocean. He opened his packsack and laid out a little mountain of almost fresh parsley on a plastic plate. There must have been fifteen pounds of the stuff and the odour was intense! We ate with our hands, grabbing little packets of greens between our fingers. While munching, we talked about our rides and encounters. The food tasted really good but after a while I got a funny sensation at the base of my jaw. It was like the saliva glands were overwhelmed. We each had a generous portion. After supper Jeffrey put the leftovers back in his pack and closed it. We got along really well and we decided to travel the road for Los Angeles together the next day.
