I am leaving for Gold River on Vancouver Island. Marc, one of my best friends from back east, is on the coast watching an island for some wealthy folks. He was the island's keeper last year as well. Basically, he makes sure that everything is running well when the owners come for their annual vacation. I think he said he was doing that from May to end of July. We had agreed earlier in the spring to a meet around this time. So I am assuming that he is still up there. He said that there is a boat that ferries people to various small islands in the Nootka Sound. He said that people knew him and would be able to drop me on the correct island. I am really looking forward to seeing him.

I took the boat from Departure Bay on the mainland and started to hitchhike in Nanaimo. I slowly made my way towards Parksville. There I got a lift with a guy named Chris. He was going to Campbell River some 100 kilometres north.

It was 10 o'clock at night. I did not have any place to go. I walked around town scouting for suitable accommodations. After a while, I found a good bench in what proved to be a quiet park. I spent the night wrapped in my sleeping bag.
