In the bus a passenger gave me 15 Boston cream donuts which I ate with gratitude during the night. With my Ameripass I could have rode the bus up to Moncton but I decided to hitchhike the last piece of road. I got out in Calais and walked through into the the Canadian side of the border into St-Stephen. As I was getting closer to Moncton things started to look familiar. I recognized overpasses and landmarks, then I saw my old high school and the houses of friends. I thanked my last driver and walked down rue Beaubassin in St. Anselme towards my Parents' house on rue Guy! Everything was quiet. René's red truck was there. He was visiting my brother Jean-Marc. I rang the bell. Somebody said, "Come in Marc!" They were waiting for a friend to stop by. When I opened the door there was a pause, a moment of hesitation. Then my brother yelled: "Daniel est arrivé! C'est Daniel, y'est revenue!" It was a big surprise for everyone. They told me later that they were shocked to how thin I was, I was already on the slim side when I left. They all rushed down from the living room, hugging me and asking me questions and bringing food and drink. Everybody was happy that I had made it alive, happy to see me again and it felt good to be back. I was home.
